A Royal Visit
A Royal Visitor
On Tuesday 21st February the Old Parish welcomed a Royal Visitor to the Church, Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal, along with the Lord and Lady Provost, Mr and Mrs George Grubb.
Our minister Moira, met the Princess at the front gate and walked them into the Church where she was introduced to Carol Christie (Session Clerk), Ken Harrower, (Clerk to the Board) and Brenda Russell (President of the Guild). The children from the Sunday Club were also inside the church. Kenna, Emily and Andrew showed the Princess the Vestry. Megan, Max and Jamie from Gylemuir spoke about Cromwell’s men stabling their horses in the church and then Ben and Ruth spoke about the Kirk Session prison, before all the children, a protection officer, the lady in waiting and the Princess all went up to the Tower! Seemingly the Princess was very interested in the story about the witch!
At the end of the short visit the Princess signed a special sheet which will be framed and displayed in the church and this was followed by an impromptu walk around the outside of the church building.
The Visit had earlier included a look around the Dower House and was going to end with a visit to Craigsbank Parish Church and lunch.
The weather was kind to the crowd who had gathered outside the church and one little boy at the last minute decided to pick a few snowdrops and handed them to the Princess as she was leaving. This was added to the posy of flowers which had been presented to her on the way into the church by Grace Bryson, Sallie’s granddaughter.
It was a very successful and enjoyable visit and one that will be remembered and talked about for many years to come.
